What's the actual difference between an M3U URL and Xtream Codes login?

My provider gave me both an M3U URL and an Xtream Codes login (host, user, pass). Do they do the same thing? Which one should I use?

Same source, different interfaces. **M3U URL** — one long link, downloads a text file of channels. Works in any player (VLC, older Smart TV apps). No built‑in EPG or VOD; every refresh re‑downloads the whole file. **Xtream Codes** — host + port + user + pass, uses the provider's API for live TV, EPG and VOD as separate endpoints. Only works in players that support it (TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, IBO Player, SmartOne). Faster, richer, better categorised. **Which to use?** Xtream Codes wherever the player supports it. M3U as a fallback. See our [player comparison](/blog/tivimate-vs-iptv-smarters-vs-xciptv-2026) and [Setup Guides](/setup-guides).
